Hatchery Horrors

This has been going around FaceBook & YouTube – but just for those not aware of what really goes on in Factory Farms
Thrown, dropped, mutilated, and ground-up alive. This is the disturbing reality faced by hundreds of thousands of chicks each day at the world’s largest egg-laying breed hatchery Hy-Line International in Spencer, Iowa.
New hidden camera footage obtained at this facility during a http://www.MercyForAnimals.org undercover investigation gives a disturbing glimpse into the cruel and industrialized reality of modern hatcheries.

Meet Roscoe, a 9 month old pitt bull/hound mix who was found by the local SPCA as a stray wondering about the Pantops area of Charlottesville. I have driven past that area a few times and I can only imagine how frightened he must have been!!! Well, this same frightened dog was adopted over 3 weeks ago and is now sitting in our home. For many years I wanted a dog to call my own but most of my situations included a strict lease that would not allow any dogs

You are not alone…Charlottesville-Central Virginia Meetup Group!!!
Finding this group was a true calling for Chuck and I (Thanks Chris)!!! As most of you know, Chuck and I are still new to Charlottesville and during our short time here, we have met many acquaintances, but we had yet to find any good friends who happen to live remotely near us- better yet- VEGAN FRIENDS!!! Well, that all changed for us on Sunday June 28th when we entered Doug’s beautiful home nestled in the heart of Afton, Virginia’s beautiful landscape. For a first ever meetup for the group, twelve people (including Chuck and I) attended the potluck event and I think I can speak for everyone who was there when I say that the connection was instant amongst all of us. For the first time we were with people who shared the same issues when dealing with omni friends/family or dining out. With that, we all walked away with great ideas and great food to take home. The next day, we all added each other as friends on Facebook. I couldn’t ask for a better meetup
C’Ville Veg*n Sausage Fest 2009
After a long wait, I have finally gotten around to posting on how well the vegan sausages came out from the Vegan Brunch cookbook. Overall, the each sausage recipe called for the basic foundation, using beans along with wheat gluten which really gave these “sausages” a very realistic texture. I personally like these sausages over the Tofurky or Field Roast brand mainly because it’s not processed and the texture is pretty damn good
Sometimes I miss a good sausage to go with my wine but I felt the spices in each kind of vegan sausage in the cookbook alone were definitely vegan wine worthy!
Out of the 3 sausage recipes that Vegan Brunch author, Isa Chandra Moskowitz mentioned in her book, I felt that each one needed a separate review (and Chuck was present to give his opinion of course!).
Our [tiny] garden
Posted by chuck in Food, Uncategorized on June 21st, 2009
A while ago, Robin conveyed to me that she wanted to create her own garden in our back yard, now that we’ve moved from a small condo in a high-rise, to a townhouse in lovely Charlottesville.
After discovering that we wouldn’t be digging into the ground (per HOA guidelines), we decided an herb-garden is probably the way to go… So we researched options, and the one Robin like (of course) cost nearly $150. I (being the man of the house:) ) decided that this would be a good opportunity to exercise our garage, and build our own. Read the rest of this entry »
Book Review: Vegan Brunch
While I was creating this post I was thinking of a small group of people gathered in someone’s living room drinking cheap wine from a box wishing that they had something better to say about a book other than the fact that it was selected in Oprah’s Book Club…
Well this book breaks that boredom and I would GLADLY buy the box of wine in order to discuss in front of a group on how great this cookbook has been for my household (no celebrity endorsement necessary)… Read the rest of this entry »
Mark Your Calendars: Richmond Vegetarian Festival on June 20th!!!
I am sure the most informed vegans/vegetarians are well aware of this event but I thought I should post it anyway just in case someone did not get the memo
This will be the first time Chuck and I will be attending this festival but so far everything seems so interesting. It was so interesting in fact, we had to decline the invite to my niece’s birthday pool party (sounds heartless, huh?). I for one am looking forward to the cooking demos and also to see Paul Shapiro, a well known animal rights activist and one of my “followers” in the twitter world.
It’s not easy being a Vegan…

Robin and I attended my company picnic this week. Lots of people had lots of fun. We played board (bored?) games instead, waiting on the meals to be served… I had specifically asked and made sure there would be at least vegetarian meals, as normally we can vegan-ize meals by opting out of the cheese. It was not one of those days, however. I had a bad feeling about it when I noticed it was catered by a BBQ Company (whose logo of course consists of a happy pig serving his own kind on a fork). My hopes raised a little bit when I noticed they had an entire line setup for children and vegetarian plates.
Friday’s After Five
We went out last night with an Army buddy of mine, who’s been here for a while. As we’re only 3 weeks into cville, we’re still very new to the area, and he’s doing his best to educate us.
We’ve been to Friday’s After Five before, but its nice to have somebody there to show you the downtown mall area, what’s good and what’s not-so-good.
